Good Life Hotel – Shang Hwa Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Good Life Hotel – Shang Hwa for the first time, I was honestly surprised by how much character this three-star place has packed into its relatively modest space. The lobby isn’t trying to be something it’s not — it’s clean, welcoming, and has this understated Taiwanese hospitality that immediately puts you at ease. You know what struck me most? The staff actually remembered my name by the second day, which doesn’t happen often in Taipei. The attention to detail in even the smallest interactions sets the tone for your entire stay.

Location & Neighborhood

The location on Shuangcheng Street is actually brilliant — I mean, you’re right in Zhongshan District, which locals know is one of the best-connected areas without the tourist chaos of Ximending. There’s this fantastic night market just a few blocks away that most guidebooks don’t even mention, and the MRT station is close enough that you’ll never worry about getting around the city. Couples seem to get this location thing figured out pretty quickly — honestly, it makes sense why they rate it so highly for romantic trips. The neighborhood truly captures the essence of authentic Taipei living.

The Room Experience

My room was compact but thoughtfully designed, with everything you actually need and nothing you don’t. The bed was surprisingly comfortable — not hotel-chain perfect, but the kind of good sleep you get when a place actually cares about the basics. What I appreciated most was the attention to small details: proper lighting for reading, enough outlets for your devices, and a bathroom that doesn’t make you feel like you’re in a shoebox. The windows open too, which is refreshing when you want some actual air circulation.

Breakfast & Dining

The breakfast buffet here is where this hotel really shows its local soul — it’s primarily Asian dishes, and they do them well. I’m talking about congee that tastes like someone’s grandmother made it, fresh dim sum, and this incredible selection of Taiwanese breakfast items you won’t find at the international chain hotels. The restaurant area gets busy around 8 AM, but there’s something nice about the energy — lots of repeat guests chatting with staff, families sharing tables. It feels authentic rather than rushed.

Why Guests Love It

What keeps people coming back — and there are definitely more repeat guests here than most places I’ve stayed — is this combination of genuine hospitality and smart location. The staff treats you like a person rather than a number, and you’re positioned perfectly to experience Taipei like someone who actually lives here. It’s not trying to be fancy, but it nails the fundamentals so well that you find yourself recommending it to friends. For the price point, you’re getting way more personality and local flavor than you’d expect from a typical three-star property. This hotel understands what travelers truly value.

  • A very enjoyable and comfortable stay – Robert from Thailand (9/10)

The location was good, with a street food area about 100 meters away and selection of restaurants near the MRT station 5 minutes' walk away. The room was clean and spacious with a large desk top to work on and space to store a suitcase. The bathroom had a tub and shower with separate shower unit and toilet bowl fitted with modern Japanese technology. The breakfast was good with varied menus changing daily and the stall were friendly and helpful.

  • 10/10 would recommend – Georgina from Singapore (8/10)

Staff were extremely helpful, even helping us with our luggage when we were struggling with it. They answered all our queries and were conversant in English which was very helpful for our complex queries. Location was excellent, within 30 mins of Taipei station and Ximending via train. Rooms were clean (including the tub) and beds were comfy. There was more than enough room for 2 big luggages to be open at the same time, along with space for us to sit and pack.

  • It was very convenient and pleasant stay! – Hoai from Vietnam (8/10)

Hotel is clean and well organised, staff is friendly and professional. Very closed to MRT station, restaurants, bars & night market are all within walking distance.

A 1 minute walk to the food markets and many restaurants.

  • Very nice, even if it was pretty far away from downtown. It was easy to use the Metro. – Steven from United States of America (9/10)

The breakfast was fine, not great, not bad. There was a lovely friendly young lady working the desk, she was very helpful and spoke excellent English. There was a great (small) night market one block away, also open during the day. Easy access to the Metro system, which we used all the time.

  • Nice – Suebpong from Germany (9/10)

Nice, not far from metro. Many things to eat nearby

  • Great access from the MRT, bus and market – Haruka from Japan (7/10)

Staff are so kind. Great access(you can get 2 MRT stations and some bus stops in 5-10min from here). Getting on a bus is not so difficult as I expected. I used Google map and NAVITIME both. Once I got the wrong bus, but thank to that, I arrived at the so peaceful cozy place, that became my favorite. The local market is only a stone’s throw away.
